A JURIED EXHIBITION

Scope

Collage, an artistic concept associated with the beginning of Modern Art, entails much more than the idea of gluing something onto something else. The names that stand out among the pioneers are: Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hoch, Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, Romare Bearden, Ray Johnson, Edward Kienholz and Robert Rauschenberg. Collage and Assemblage combine two- and three-dimensional images and materials to create original art. Utilizing various adherence methods, the process combines often unrelated items and other media to investigate public and private issues, some seriously, some “tongue-in-cheek.”

Coos Art Museum

“Coos Art Museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast. Through collections, exhibitions and educational programs, we are building an arts and cultural community and promoting the appreciation, understanding and expression of visual art.” Located on the scenic southern Oregon Coast Coos Art Museum is the 3rd oldest art museum in Oregon. CAM traces its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Members of the League conducted early operations in storefront locations before moving to a Carnegie Library Building. In 1982 Coos Art Museum members, acquired and remodeled the old US Post Office building, a historical art deco structure built in 1937. The Museum has five active galleries totaling almost 5,000 sq feet of display space and a 540 piece Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century and contemporary American art.

Paintings by Gold Beach artist and winner of the 2008 CAM Biennial J.M. Steele will be on view. The exhibition will include her luminous landscapes and humorous takeoffs on famous historical paintings, using dogs to replace the original human subjects. Click the image for the full tour.
